2023 | DCP | Colour | 126’ | Japanese; Turkish sub. | Japan

September, 15 Eylül Monday 12.00, Sanat Fabrikası // September, 19 Tuesday 21.30, Vural

Saori is a single mother struggling to raise her son Minato, who goes to primary school. Minato’s behaviour begins to change following a fire in a large downtown hostess bar. The mother becomes very concerned after her son runs away from home one night and returns with a scar on his ear. Minato claims that he was psychologically and physically abused by his teacher, Mr. Hiro. Saori demands an immediate investigation into the incident. Koreeda’s new film is reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Rashomon. We witness the same events from the perspectives of Saori, Mr. Hiro, and finally, Minato. Each chapter reveals the facts and provides new answers to the same question that comes up in different contexts throughout the film: “Who is the monster?”

Monster features the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s last film score as well. This film is also screened at the festival in his memory.
