Belmin Söylemez is back after 10 years with her second feature, Ayna Ayna / Mirror Mirror. As in her debut feature film Şimdiki Zaman / Present Tense, Söylemez prefers to focus on the aspects of Istanbul rarely shown on screen in Mirror Mirror to create an original urban film.
The film portrays the intersecting stories of three women. Acting is what brings Aylin, Frida and Lale together. University student Aylin sees acting as a way out. She joins an acting course, dreaming of auditioning for a television series set in the Ottoman period. Here, she meets Frida, an actress whose infatuation with the famous painter Frida Kahlo has led he to reinvent herself. Course instructor Lale is an experienced professional striving to keep her independent theatre alive. The three women struggle to make their dreams come true, even if they often come to the brink of giving up. Mirror Mirror is closely connected to the realities of modern Turkey, especially to the struggle of women.
