Emotionally vulnerable French teacher Blanche Renard is still trying to recover from her last relationship. At a party, Blanche bumps into an old school friend, Grégoire Lamoureux, and is quite taken by his flirty attitude. As his surname suggests, Grégoire plays the perfect lover. Blanche is yearning for attention and quickly latches on to Grégoire. This picture-perfect relationship quickly matures into marriage, but Grégoire manipulatively alienates his wife from the outside world. Assuming the characters’ surnames symbolise this narrative, Blanche Renard (fox) will free herself from confinement and rediscover freedom in the woods.
Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, Just the Two of Us is an impressive film on domestic violence starring Melvil Poupaud as the manipulative husband and popular French actor known from Other People’s Children, Virginie Efira, who plays Blanche and her twin sister Rose.
